Fresh from her incredible smash-hit historical romance Shadow Music, New York Times bestselling author Julie Garwood returns to contemporary romantic suspense with this wonderfully sexy, exhilarating blockbuster. Filled with sizzling passion and breathless adventure, Fire and Ice features a feisty heroine whom Garwood’s devoted readers already know and love from her hugely popular novel Murder List.
Sophie Rose, a tough and determined newspaper reporter, is the daughter of Bobby Rose, a suave, charming, and handsome gentleman who also happens to be a notorious big-time thief sought by every law-enforcement agency in the country. When the major Chicago daily where she works insists she write an exposé about her roguish father, Sophie refuses, quits her job, and goes to work at a small newspaper. Far from her onetime high-powered crime beat, she now covers local personalities such as the quirky winner of several area 5K runs whose trademark is goofy red socks.
Those red socks–with Sophie’s business card neatly tucked inside–are practically all that’s found after runner William Harrington is killed near Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, seemingly the victim of a brutal death by polar bear. The Alaska cops want to know why Harrington carried Sophie’s card. With an unerring nose for a good story, she heads north.
What Sophie doesn’t realize is that on her journey from Chicago to Prudhoe Bay, danger follows in her wake. After one attempt on her life, she’s been assigned brash but sexy Jack MacAlister as a bodyguard by the cautious FBI. Amid great peril and deadly intrigue in the unforgiving Alaskan terrain, she and Jack form an uneasy alliance sparked with sensual attraction. But they will soon be fighting more than their growing passion for each other. Powerful forces will stop at nothing to prevent the exposure of the sinister conspiracy Sophie and Jack are about to uncover.
Captivating mystery, unyielding desire, unrelenting action in a setting both beautiful and lethal–Julie Garwood weaves these thrilling elements into a heat-generating masterpiece of romantic suspense.

Customer Rating: Summary: The sassy heroine has returned... Comment: Although I was sorely disappointed with her historical last year, after reading this one I am firmly of the belief she didn't write last year's debacle. Our heroine Sophie is a wonderful contemporary vision of her early historical heroines; sassy, witty, smart ( most of the time) and not afraid to love. This is what I liked about this new book; the heroine wasn't afraid to take charge of her own desires, though a bit more steamy intimate scenes would have been nice. It is nice to know she rocked Jack's socks off but this reader needed a bit more of a visual ( hence the 4 stars rather than five), show us don't tell us.
Jack, our hero, was definitely an Alpha- the smiles quickly got under our heroine's skin-, it was the verbal sparring that made for great sexual tension, and the whole YouTube thing was hysterical yet timely. I have to say thought I think the publisher's advertising department dropped the ball on this one. They could have easily put this scene (without actually killiing somone) on YouTube to promote the book, as so many midlist authors are now promoting thire book this way, it seemed they could have shown a bit of a creativity and done some to cause sensation for the book.
If there was any drawback to the book it was the abrupt ending. I would have liked to have seen a confrontation between Jack and her father, but I liked how she left the door open. Other opening seem to include her friend Cordie and Regan 's brother. The whole story was believable, the suspense didn't overpower the romance. All in all this was a fast paced interesting romantic suspense offering that should satisfy the most decerning romance palate: suspense, a sexy alpha hero, a witty/sassy heroine who takes command in the bedroom and a HEA, although abrupt, was well done and satisfying.
If you are a Gawood fan you will want to read this book with the knowledge that last year's offering was just a bump in the road of success for this favorite author.
Customer Rating: Summary: where's the $9.99 KINDLE price? Comment: I was really disappointed that the publisher of this book did not price this book accordingly for the KINDLE. I'm a HUGE fan of Ms. Garwood's books, but with the high cost of this book I'm going to have to wait until it is released at a lesser price. I bought my KINDLE knowing that I wouldn't have to spend such a high price for my books as I use to wait and get them at the library for free. With my KINDLE I can still buy books so that the authors get some royalties. But anything over the $9.99 price is not something I am willing to pay for. Please get these books back in price with other KINDLE offerings.
Customer Rating: Summary: Enjoyable Read Comment: Julie Garwood is one of my must have authors and I really enjoyed this one. It is not one of her great reads but rather a very nice read. She can take so much unrelated information and bring it to a cohesive and interesting conclusion. I liked both characters, as always both are beautiful and honorable. The chemistry is nice and the story is a sequel to MURDER LIST.
Sophie is one of the three best friends from that novel. Her father is a lawyer with the ability to sniff out the money hidden by unscrupulous people and disappear it. The FBI finds him a man of interest. She is a writer for a minor newspaper in Chicago and gets the less than sterling assignments. The biggie in her life at the moment is that the pension fund for a brewery has been cyberscamed and the president of the company is pointing a finger at her father.
Jack MacAlister is the partner of Alex Buchanan who married Regan in MURDER LIST. He likes what he sees of Sophie but knowing who her father is puts a crimp in his desire to get close to the beautiful reporter. Later when her assignment begins to worry her friends Jack is tricked into agreeing to go with her to Alaska.
I found some of the details abit far fetched, but overall a good read with enough heat to make up for the lack. It was worth the money to me but you have to be the judge on whether you will pay full price or wait for the paperback.
Customer Rating: Summary: Romance 4, Mystery 2 Comment: Garwood can write a great romance, the relationship between Jack and Sophie is very good. Some funny dialogue, attraction and pull between these two was entertaining and it's always good to see old "friends" from previous books show up in a novel.
The mystery portion of this book is where it all falls apart, I kept asking myself "Why" There was no reason for Jack and Sophie to have gotten involved in the mystery, the link was to weak. Using "Journal entries" to explain the mystery portion is an attempt to build a story involving readers, and it just doesn't work in this book.
This book would have been outstanding if the mystery portion blended better with the love story, as is they are oil and water.
Customer Rating: Summary: Rip Off Comment: I love Julie Garwood and normally race out to buy each of her books. I am so disappointed not only by the lack of romance and intrigue of this book, but also that it was priced so high for an e-book. I don't know who Garwood or her publisher thinks they are, but why should we pay 40% more than kindle books were promised to be priced at. This is a rip off! Hold off getting this until the price comes down to a reasonable level.
